Types of Pains and Causes.

Mechanical or non-specific low back pain

This type of injury is most common with pain relating to non-specific and vague factors. These included increased tension, stress, joint stiffness and also muscle restrictions. Typically, 90% of these will recover fully in 8 weeks from the acute, nonspecific back pain.

Disc related low back pain

Most commonly, low back pain or lumbar pain is a result of damage or degeneration (wear-and-tear) of the discs which sit between the individual vertebrae. This is generally triggered by repetitive movements such as bending or a sudden onset linked to bending or twisting. This causes a weakness or disruption of the fibrous ring on the outer surface of a disc. This allows the contents of the disc to push out of their normal position. The terms sometimes used to describe an injury to the disc are slipped disc, disc bulge, prolapsed disc, disc herniation or disc protrusion – these terms are often interchangeable and can mean the same thing.

In reality, as much as half of the population have signs of degeneration in the lumbar spine. However is should be considered that a significant portion of these people are not experiencing lower back pain symptoms.
